Tipperary Heartlands: Loughmore village is simply beautiful

In the latest of our Tipperary Heartlands pieces we look at Loughmore village and all its charms

Loughmore Cottage is on the move: new campaign 'tip the teapot’ launched

Loughmore is worth a visit, it has so much to offer

Loughmore is a quaint and picturesque Village, located on the banks of the River Suir, situated six miles from Thurles and three miles from Templemore in Mid Tipperary.

It is widely known for the magnificent Loughmore Castle, former seat of the Purcell family, Barons of Loughmore. Some of the best views of the 14th Century Castle are enjoyed by commuters on the Cork to Dublin rail line, which passes through the Village and right by the Castle.

However, those who whizz by on the train are missing out on other historic sites in the Village, such as the 13th Century Abbey and the ancient Old Mill which was built in 1842.

In the Church grounds you will find the burial chambers of the Cormack brothers Daniel & William. Though innocent they were hanged in Nenagh Jail in 1858 but reburied in their native Loughmore in a special Mausoleum built in 1910. A very interesting story, and well worth a visit.

The Picnic area beside The Mill provides a very tranquil spot with the river Suir flowing gently past. A stroll along the river bank affords an opportunity to commune with nature and also admire the beautiful Duck House which was erected by Loughmore Gun Club in 2016 and is home to numerous species of duck that live in the Sanctuary.

A huge attraction to both locals and visitors alike. You won’t want to miss the famous multiple award winning Community Tearooms either.

Known as The Cottage it is situated in the heart of the Village in one of the oldest houses with a half-door that’s always open and staffed by locals to welcome you.

The early success of the tearooms has inspired the establishment of many similar tearooms and coffee shops in other small towns and villages which have become welcome facilities for locals and tourists.

The Cottage is renowned not only for the warmth of its welcome, but also for the quality of the food served there, having received many National and International awards since it was established in 2012.

It has won the Irish Times Best Tearooms in Ireland, multiple John & Sally McKenna Food Awards and won the County Tipperary Chamber of Commerce Award for its Hospitality and Tourism. A visit to The Cottage is like stepping back in time.

So if it is a day of visiting historical sites, popping in for a relaxing Cuppa to The Cottage, or a pint in Stapleton’s Bar, Loughmore has everything to offer you.

It is definitely one of Tipperary’s Hidden Gems, offering an authentic tourist experience and is a must for any tourist visiting the area.
