Killenaule GAA are leading the way and going plastic bottle free

Killenaule GAA are leading the way and going plastic bottle free

Killenaule and Tipperary stars Jimmy Feehan (Senior Football) and Podge O’Dwyer (U20 Hurling) with Killenaule GAA Chairman John Healy, as club branded stainless steel water bottles were distributed.

Thanks to a partnership between Cashel based essential medicines company Amneal Ireland Ltd and Killenaule GAA and Ladies football club, the club grounds in Killenaule plan to be free of single use plastics in the future.

The Governments Climate Action Plan is a roadmap to reducing emissions and ultimately becoming a net zero emissions society by 2050. A key part of that plan is the focus on The Circular Economy. The plan encourages us all to rethink, reuse, recycle and buy to last.

It is within this mindset that Amneal and Killenaule GAA came together to reduce (and ultimately eliminate) the use of single use plastic from their sports grounds. Amneal have kindly sponsored a club branded reusable stainless steel water bottle for every player in the club, from U5’s to adults, boys and girls, men and women.

Amneal Ireland VP of Operations is Niall Prendergast who leads their Irish operations and the team of over 100 employees in Cashel.

‘Amneal takes great pride in making a difference in local communities through support of the organisations that operate in them, and this was a great opportunity to make a practical difference and a chance to help educate and change behaviours with the next generation around climate change, our environment and the sustainability programs that are necessary today.’

Chairman of Killenaule GAA John Healy is delighted with the initiative ‘It’s been a great few days distributing the water bottles, especially with the children who are over the moon to get them. Since Covid, sports grounds have been awash with empty single use plastic bottles, so this is a great step to reducing and eliminating that habit at our GAA grounds. And it fits in very well with the GAA’s Green Clubs initiative, which has a focus on eliminating single use plastic.’

With the weather finally improving the water bottles will be put to good use in Killenaule, with the two pitches and ball wall busy every evening with players young and old!
