U16B All-Ireland Camogie Series
Tipperary 1-12
Galway 2-8
The team had their first home match against a Galway team that have had the upper hand at this level at u14/u15. Proud captains for the day were Sarah Rochford and Niamh Manton.
Conditions were excellent for the warm up and the pitch looked fantastic as always. Tipp started well and took the lead with a free from Aoibheann Maher. Both sides showed great commitment and the first 10 mins were full of hooks and blocks with scores going tit for tat at 0-2 to 0-2.
Tipp half back line of Emily McGrath, Sarah Rochford, and Shauna Looby were driving the team on and another 0-2 from Aoibheann had Tipp in the lead. Then injury to Tipp full-back Emma Costello forced a few changes and Galway scored 1-1 in the following ten minutes.
Tipp settled again with great puckouts from keeper Maebh Leahy into a strong breeze and the midfield of Kaelinn Rossiter and Abi Kelly were winning great ball and bursting forward. Fresh legs gave Tipp a boost and great scores followed from Emma Kiely and Sarah Rochford with support from Niamh Manton, Molly Carr, Eibhlin Bourke, and Grace Flanagan leaving the half-time score level 6 points to 1-3.
More subs followed as per dev guidelines that all girls get at least 50% game time and Tipp started well with scores from Aoibheann again who was fantastic with placed balls on the day. Keeper Ruby Kelly was solid in dealing with balls dropping in but Galway’s running game started to take over and they tagged on a few points.
Tipp responded with good scores from Molly McLoughlin and Aoibheann. Galway then struck for a goal to take the lead by three points and dropped a sweeper. Emma Costello came back on at centre-back back and the half-forward line of Mary Kate Ely, Emma Kiely, and Sarah Williams really stepped up the pressure on the Galway line.
Our full back line of Brid Quirke, Jenna Hackett, and Orla Gleeson had won serious ball and Tipp started running at Galway with intent. Tipp won a free on the 21-yard line with 3 minutes remaining. Rather than tap it over for a point.
Aoibheann spotted a small gap in the far corner and blasted a rocket to the back of the net. Tipp followed this up with an excellent point from Rachel Heffernan to take the lead. Tipp kept things tight with huge work to keep Galway outside our 45 and the ref Siobhan Ryan blew the final whistle.
Well done to all the girls on firstly showing great resilience and heart to come back and overall for a great result against a strong Galway team. Final score 1-12 to 2-8.
Two wins from two and Tipp now moves on with plenty to improve for next Saturday and Rd 3 away to a very strong Limerick team who defeated them in Munster this season. Thanks to our coaches and supporters and all involved at Tipperary Camogie for the wonderful opportunity to play for the county at the home pitch in the Ragg.
