FBD Insurance Intermediate Hurling Championship Round 2 Review

Group 1

There was a sizeable upset in this group after the weekend's fare with Ballybacon Grange getting the better of Cappawhite in Golden on Saturday evening.

Despite the men in white taking a big early lead of 0-8 to 0-1 after the first 15 minutes, they would struggle in the second half against a hungrier Ballybacon Grange team.

Willie Barry was the best performer on the day, continuing his good form with 0-5, but two second-half goals at different points in the half seen the south side run out 2-12 to 0-15 winners.

Golden Kilfeacle were made to work extremely hard for their second win as they bested Clonoulty Rossmore’s second team in Bansha.

Jack Leamy was the main man again for Golden, hitting 0-10 in the 0-19 to 0-16 win as Clonoulty Rossmore kept in touch all through but just lacked that extra punch.

Group 2

Borrisokane bounced back after their opening round defeat to record a hard earned win over a goal hungry Skeheenarinky.
Oisin Larkin (0-13, 0-7f) was the main man again in what was a good attacking display as they hit 1-26 in the victory.

Borris’ led 1-13 to 2-4 at half-time as Tomas Vaughan and Tommy Sweeney scored the goals for the south side, but despite those majors, Skeheen were always playing catch up and two further goals from 21-yard frees from Vaughan still wasn't enough for Skeheen to claw it back, with Borrisokane winning out on a 1-26 to 4-11 scoreline.

Another south derby in this group seen Ballingarry make it two wins in as many games with a hard-fought 2-17 to 4-10 win over Kilsheelan Kilcash.

Conor Vaughan rounded off a brilliantly individual display with the winning free on the stroke of 60 minutes, after an ill-tempered game seen red cards for Mark Kehoe and Ben Ivors early in the second half.

Group 3

Shannon Rovers continued their revival with another two points collected in their 2-17 to 0-19 win over Drom & Inch on Sunday.

With the sides level at 1-8 to 0-11 at the break, it was all to play for but the Rovers dug deep to win the second half and put one foot in the quarter-finals.

Elsewhere, Portroe had a much-improved performance from round one, as they recorded a comprehensive 1-28 to 1-19 win over Arravale Rovers in Newport on Saturday.

John Sheedy was in fine form once again as Port put themselves in with a great chance of qualifying with Arravale Rovers to come in round three in a fortnight.

Group 4

There were two very well contested games in the final group over the weekend, with Moneygall and Carrick Davins recording wins in high-scoring ties.

Moneygall defeated Knockavilla Kickhams late on with a 4-22 to 1-21 win in a very entertaining game. Sean Kenneally (1-5), Paddy Fogarty (2-4), and Joe Fogarty (1-7, 0-5f) were in formidable form for the North club, who led 2-11 to 1-11 at half-time but pulled away late on in the second half.

Kickhams were well in the game for 45 minutes thanks to a Cormac Carr goal and point tallies from David Butler and Stephen Browne, but it wasn't to be for the Dundrum men.
