Almost 4000 competed in the schools cross country championships at Thurles Crokes Athletic Club.
Almost 4,000 Primary School Students from across Tipperary attended Cross Country Championships in Thurles Crokes Athletic Club which was a huge success despite the rain.
Parents, grandparents, relations and friends all made their way to the Racecourse Road from early on Wednesday to ensure they were in time for the races as there were up to 40 races taking place.
While there was no official race day programme, parents liased with school staff as to the times and events taking place and the crowds that turned up for the extremely well organised event was testament to the popularity of Cross Country running.
Schools of all sizes were represented and medals made their way across the county with top-class races showing the stars of the future are on track for stellar careers.
Tipperary Athletics posted online about the day which was a great success overall: "Woah! Just about thawed out after today's Cross Country in Thurles Crokes Athletic Club.
"Firstly, a massive well done to all 3869 Primary School Students from across the entire County who attended and ran their best.
"It's such a pleasure to be part of such a day that really showcases the importance of putting yourself out there and doing your best. The students really stood up to the challenge with the weather playing it's part! Always the way when Cross Country comes round.
"Secondly, a gracious thanks to the schools, the dedicated teachers, SNA's and helpers who get behind the day and support it. We appreciate the obstacles that you overcome to make the trip and thank you for your efficiency and patience.
"Thirdly, we had huge support for the athletes around the course which is so vital to all who are competing. The words of encouragement can be much needed at times when the going gets tough.
"Lastly, thanks to the order of Malta for their attendance and their attention to those who needed it today. Thanks to the volunteers for their hard work especially our friends from the C.B.S. Thurles and Ursuline Thurles . Of course the day couldn't go ahead without Thurles Crokes Athletic Club who allow us to use their grounds for competition.
"Results will be posted on the Tipperary Athletics Website in due course. Thanks for your patience. If you have a child who is interested in joining an Athletic Club, we strongly encourage you to reach out to your local club or contact Tipperary Athletics for information.
"The crowd in attendance today was amazing and we would love to see these numbers transfer to Club competition."
