‘Bournea Reaching Out’ is delighted to to announce that Prof. William J.Smyth will lecture at Lismackin Hall on May 13th, on ‘the great famine in Bournea Parish and District 1845-52’.
Prof. Smyth was educated at Boulebane NS, and Templemore CBS, from which he secured a scholarship to UCD, where he was auditor of the Student Geography Society. His BA dissertation was “A Regional Geography of North Tipperary.” For his PhD thesis in 1969 he took: “Clogheen-Burncourt, a social geography of a rural parish.” William lectured and studied in Swansea, Syracuse USA, and San Fernando State College in L.A. In 1971 he was appointed lecturer in Geography at UCD. In ‘74 he became head lecturer and head of the Dept. of Geography at Maynooth. In ‘77 he was made Prof. of Geography at Maynooth. Admission is J10, including a draw for three books. All are welcome to attend this lecture.
