Nenagh town centre could get a Fleadh facelift

Nenagh town centre could be in for a facelift in the run up to the town hosting the Munster Fleadh next month.

Business premises owners and residents are being encouraged by Nenagh Municipal District Council to avail of its Town Centre Initiative to improve the facades of buildings. The scheme provides for works that include painting, removal of old signage and putting up hanging baskets.

“The council is looking forward to applications, especially with the Munster Fleadh coming in July,” said district administrator Rosemary Joyce.

While the budget is limited, she is encouraging owners to apply as the take up will be better in some areas than in others. “It will be done on a first come, first served basis, but we will do our best to accommodate all applications,” she said.

The scheme has been welcomed by Cllr Hughie McGrath, who said it was a good initiative and praised the council for giving people a hand in improving their premises.

Cllr Joe Hannigan wants the scheme broadened next year to include Borrisokane, where the council is upgrading the town’s sewerage system. He also wants it rolled out in Cloughjordan ahead of next year’s centenary commemorations there for the Easter Rising.

He was supported by Cllr Ger Darcy and Cllr Michael O’Meara, who also asked that colour schemes be co-ordinated.

Ms Joyce said that while this scheme was under the council’s Town Centre Initiative, there will be discretion to run similar schemes under the general maintenance fund. She said that owners will be asked to submit a colour card with their applications.

The closing date for applications is Friday, June 19, and the work must be completed before October 16.
