Council's refusal to take in charge Tipperary car park described as 'missed opportunity'

A Labour councillor has described Fethard County Council’s rejection of his call for a busy car park in Killenaule to be taken in charge by the local authority as a “missed opportunity”.

Cllr Michael ‘Chicken’ Brennan expressed his disappointment at the council’s response to his motion requesting Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District take in charge the Slieveardagh Centre Car Park in his hometown.

The motion was tabled by Cllr Brennan and seconded by Carrick-on-Suir Fianna Fáil Cllr Kieran Bourke at Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District’s latest monthly meeting.

Cllr Brennan told the meeting the written response he received from the district engineer stated that the council didn’t have the resources to manage or maintain the car park located on River Street.

He said this was a missed opportunity for the council and highlighted how the car park was used by a lot of people who work and shop in the town.

Cllr Brennan told council management the Slieveardagh Centre Car Park was particularly favoured by elderly people as it was closer to local shops than the town’s existing council owned car park where the disabled parking spaces were blocked by bottle banks.

The council car park was also often full, he pointed out.

Cllr Brennan added that Slieveardagh Centre was willing to hand over the car park at no expense to the council.
