Work is set to begin before the end of the year on one of North Tipperary’s most hazardous routes. The Latteragh Bends, a winding stretch of the R498 between Nenagh and Borrisoleigh, will undergo a €30m realignment aimed at improving safety.

Tipperary County Council has already acquired the necessary land, and the scheme is due to go to tender shortly. A contractor is expected to be appointed by Christmas.
Senior roads engineer Kieran Malone told councillors that the new, straighter road should be open within two years. The existing bends, which hug the Nenagh River as the road snakes through the hills, have long been considered dangerous by motorists.
The project marks a long-awaited step towards modernising the district’s road network, though it will still be some time before drivers reap the benefits.
