The Government has unveiled a €360 million investment in Active Travel and Greenways projects, set to transform journeys across the country in 2026.

This funding will pave the way for new walking and cycling routes nationwide. County Tipperary is set to benefit from €4.5 million in 2026, with €1.1 million earmarked for a project launching at Castlemeadows in Thurles.

Ireland aims to create 200 kilometres of fresh walking and cycling paths in 2026, marking a major milestone for the Climate Action Plan. The Department of Transport anticipates these new routes will help reduce transport pollution.

The largest Active Travel allocation in Tipperary is €1.4 million for 970 metres of cycling paths in Birdhill. Other allocations include €100,000 for the Ardfinnan Bridge project, €40,000 for Cullen National School, and €5,000 each for signage at Mt Bruis, Burncourt, and Scoil San Isadoir. Clonoulty village will receive €6,000, and €3,000 is designated for design work at the SuperValu Junction in Cahir. St Mary’s School in Killenaule will receive €480,000 under the Safer Routes to School programme. An additional €350,000 is allocated for staff costs in the Active Travel Unit of Tipperary County Council.

Tipperary will receive €500,000 in Greenway funding, including €100,000 for the Cashel to Cahir Greenway, €150,000 for sections of the Blueway between Cahir and Kilmeaden, and €50,000 for the Lough Derg Greenway. An additional €200,000 is reserved for engineering staff costs.

A total of €500,000 is allocated for Bus Stop Enhancement works to improve bus stops in Rearcross, Portroe, and the Silvermines. The Silvermines stop is scheduled for completion next.
