Concerns raised over Tipperary tenants treating houses 'like dumps'

Cllr Shane Lee raised the issue at the latest meeting of the Thurles Municipal District of the Tipperary County Council

Concerns raised over Tipperary tenants treating houses 'like dumps'

Tenants in several social housing areas in Tipperary have been treating their homes like dumps, a County Councillor has said.

The matter was raised by Cllr Shane Lee during the most recent meeting of the Thurles Municipal District of the Tipperary County Council.

According to Cllr Lee, many social housing units in the area do not have an active waste disposal system in place, resorting to them dumping their rubbish at the back of their houses.

This, according to Cllr Lee, is raising many issues for many other tenants in the area.

Cllr Lee felt the state of some of the houses in question was unacceptable, and that it was not right that tenants would resort to this.

Cllr Jim Ryan agreed with Cllr Lee on the matter, stating that it is an issue that has been brought to his attention on a number of occasions over the years.

Cllr Ryan felt that it is unfair on other tenants in the area to have to deal with the issue of rubbish being dumped so close to their homes, claiming that the rubbish brings a multitude of rodents to the vicinity.

He stated that he has attempted to escalate the matter on a number of occasions, however the County Council has been slow in acting.

The County Council responded to the matter, saying that talks are open between the tenant liaison officer’s team and the environmental enforcement officer’s team.

They added, however, that the matter is not one that can be resolved quickly.

They stated that there is an obligation for the tenant to have an active waste removal service, and that they are working with some of the tenants in question to ensure that this becomes the case moving forward.
