Tipperary schools experienced a €1.7 million reduction in Emergency Works Scheme (EWS) funding for 2025.
The EWS steps in to fund critical repairs when emergencies strike schools and helps welcome new students with special needs.
An emergency is a situation that poses an immediate risk to health, life, property, or the environment; occurs in sudden, unforeseen circumstances; requires immediate action; and, if not corrected, would prevent the school, or part of it, from opening.
This scheme cannot be used to supplement previous applications under other schemes that were refused funding.
Speaking on the funding, Minister for Education and Youth, Hildegarde Naughton, said the scheme ensures that schools that need resources due to an emergency have access to funding for urgent works.
“The purpose of the Emergency Works Scheme (EWS) is to provide funding for unforeseen emergencies or to facilitate inclusion and access for pupils with special needs," Naughton said.
It does so by ensuring that schools that need resources due to an emergency have access to funding for urgent works.
“An emergency is a situation that poses an immediate risk to health, life, property, or the environment; is sudden and unforeseen; and requires immediate action, and, in the case of a school, if not corrected, would prevent the school or part from opening.
“The EWS operates with a minimal scope and works to address the emergency situation. The EWS is intended to address an emergency situation and usually provides only an interim measure until a permanent solution can be delivered under the Summer Works Scheme (SWS), which covers upgrade works to the school.
“With regards to total emergency works funding allocated to schools in each county in 2023, 2024, and 2025.”
