St. Anne’s also offers the two-year Leaving Certificate Applied Programme. This is for students who wish to follow a practical or vocationally oriented programme.

The Leaving Certificate Applied is made up of a range of courses that are structured around three elements: Vocational Preparation, Vocational Education and General Education.

In 2023 the first students in St. Anne’s completed the Leaving Certificate Applied. School Principal, Mr. John Cullinane, paid tribute to the class saying:

"They were the first students in St. Anne’s to sit the Leaving Certificate Applied Programme and they excelled in their commitment and application to their studies. Such was their commitment that 80% of the LCA class achieved a Distinction (over 85%) in their Leaving Certificate."

Mr. Cullinane said the school "strives to help every student reach their own academic potential and is very proud of the successes of its students".

In Leaving Certificate 2023, a remarkable 70% of students achieved over 400 points, which is significantly higher than the 53% of students who achieved this nationally. Furthermore, 35% of St. Anne’s students achieved over 500 points compared to 26% nationally.

In 2022 St. Anne’s was named as The Irish Times joint top school in County Tipperary in terms of the percentage of students who progress onto Third Level in 2022.

Transition Year

Transition Year is a very busy, productive and active year in St. Anne’s and, as a result, it is very popular with students, with over 90% of students opting to complete Transition Year.

Transition Year offers students the opportunity to explore areas of interest to them.

Students take part in the following activities: Young Social Innovators, Junk Kouture, BT Young Scientist Competition, Student Enterprise Awards, An Gaisce President’s Award, SciFest, Young Environmentalist and Art competitions.

Students also receive driving lessons in school and develop their computer skills. Many trips are organised throughout the year, including a trip abroad. This gives students the opportunity to experience many different places and cultures.

Students complete 3 weeks of work placement throughout the year and also study a wide range of subjects. Studying these subjects also assists with choosing the subjects that they will study for the Leaving Certificate.

Extracurricular Activities in St. Anne’s

St. Anne’s boasts a wide range of extra-curricular activities for students.

"We encourage students to participate in extra-curricular events, especially first years, as it is a great way to settle into a new school community", said Ms Jeanne Dowling, Deputy Principal.

Sporting Activities include: athletics, basketball, camogie, Equestrian – showjumping and hunter trials, Gaelic football, golf, hockey, swimming, tennis and soccer. Students train each week in school and compete in many sporting competitions.

Sporting activities help students to develop many skills outside of the classroom and also develop friendships and bonds with students from across the school community.

Musical Activities include: band, choir, orchestra and School Musical. Students with a musical interest meet weekly and perform together at school band/orchestra.

The school musical takes place before Christmas each year, and allows students from all year groups come together to display their many musical, singing, dancing and acting skills. Students are eagerly rehearsing and looking forward to the upcoming performance of Footloose in December in The Excel Theatre.

Other extra-curricular activities include public speaking, Irish and English debating, photography club, games club, creative writing, science club, coding club, fund-raising for various charities and Student Council.

Junk Kouture in St. Anne’s

Ms Helen Ryan, Art teacher in St. Anne’s Secondary School, says that ‘Junk Kouture is one of the highlights of her school year.

Our students are very creative and innovative and use their skills to create wonderfully artistic and creative garments for Junk Kouture each year.

It is a competition that requires huge commitment and dedication from students, as well as an artistic flair’. Helen said she was particularly delighted with the National success of St. Anne’s Student, Éabha Byrnes, in May this year.

Éabha’s colourful creation, ‘Drowning Duchess’, was created using swimming floats. Éabha was among 10 National Finalists chosen to represent Ireland in the International Junk Kouture Competition early next year.

Éabha and her teacher, Ms Helen Ryan, will be representing Ireland in the World Final of Junk Kouture in Monaco in February 2024. Mr Cullinane said

"All in St. Anne’s are very proud of Éabha’s wonderful achievement. She excelled in her interview with Ryan Tubridy on The Late, Late Show last May. It is a huge honour for St. Anne’s to have Éabha represent Ireland in the World Finals of Junk Kouture in Monaco and she will represent her school and her country with pride and honour".
