Slievenamon Challenge Cup team: Breda Foley, Vera Power, Ber Ryan, Ann Murphy, Carmel Williams and Manager Teresa O’Brien
Come hell or high water, ‘golfers gotta golf’
After the disappointment of the Captains’ Weekend having to be postponed due to rain, last week’s competitions have been notable for the dedication of golfers who have gone to sometimes extreme lengths in an effort to weatherproof themselves on the course - with some simply throwing caution to the wind and heading out in t-shirts and shorts with the “sure it will dry out” approach to the whole matter.
Of course, interspersed with the deluges, the sun snook out intermittently from behind the clouds to remind us that we are, indeed, in the middle of July, and that the layers of rain gear being sported are actually rather hot and heavy for the time of year.
Come hell or high water (and this expression has appeared quite apposite the past week), ‘golfers gotta golf’ and so competitions continued apace.
Martin Ryan wins singles
In last weekend’s Gents Singles Competition, Martin Ryan squelched into 1st place on 45 points, with Padraig Lahart a respectable 2nd place on 42 points, and John Hurley winning Gross on 27.
Monday Mixed Scramble
In Monday’s Mixed Scramble Competition, Par Slattery, Tadg Browne and Vera Power took top spot on 34.9. Michael W O’Meara, Sean O’Dea and Marie Quirke came 2nd on 38, while Adrian Furlong, Robert Phelan and Rosemary Lalor rounded out the winners in 3rd on 37.2.
Rena loves go-karting
There were no competitions on Tuesday. Instead, we had some fun on our expanded Mythical Legends Adventure Park, while we were testing out some of our newly opened attractions. For reasons of propriety I will not include any photographs of those Members who participated, although it must be said that Rena Kelly is an absolutely dab hand at go-karting!
SENIORS GOLF
Wednesday’s Slievenamon Seniors Competition enjoyed lovely weather, of which full advantage was taken. Tadhg Browne came up trumps again - this team joined by Eddie Daly and Billy Phelan to take top spot on 96 points. Michael Kenny, Pat Johnson, Con Hayes and John O’Sullivan took 2nd place on 95 points, while Tony Falvey, Vincent Phelan and Trevor Gough took 3rd on 89 points.
Christine Morris tops
Thursday’s Ladies 12 Hole Stableford Competition had somewhat less luck with the weather, but Christine Morris scored 26 points to win the Competition.
Valiant Challenge Cup team bow out
There was disappointment for our Ladies Challenge Cup team on Saturday as they lost the Munster East Final to Clonakilty Golf Club in challenging conditions and a closely fought match, played in Fermoy. It followed a fairy tale campaign where our valiant team, comprising Breda Foley, Vera Power, Ber Ryan, Ann Murphy and Carmel Williams, under the stewardship of Manager Teresa O’Brien, played some fantastic golf and showed themselves the equal of the best in Munster, We are incredibly proud of them all.
Captains’ Weekend - we hope!
Next weekend, weather permitting (and we are nearly afraid to tempt fate like that!) Captain Terry O’Brien and Lady Captain Ann O’Dea will be hosting their rescheduled Captains’ Prize Weekend so I am very much hoping that I will be able to give you some information on that.
In the meantime, pity Paul Kenny and his team as they battle the advancing water, King Canute style, and use every effort to have the course in the pristing state that is Paul’s signature.
