Clonmel AC's William Maunsell ran a personal best to finish fourth in the mass race and 15th overall in the elite race in a time of 2 hours 16 min 33 sec at the recent TCS London Marathon
The TCS London Marathon took place on Sunday morning, April 21 and there were high hopes for Clonmel AC runners William Maunsell, David Mansfield and Sean Tobin.
In near perfect conditions in Greenwich Park, our intrepid Clonmel athletes set off to complete the 42k marathon distance as quickly as they could against a world class elite field.
All looked good at the halfway point, with Sean Tobin leading the way with 65.36, Wiliam Maunsell 67.33 and David Mansfield 68.54.
But things began to change in order of the three boys. Sean Tobin’s early speed began to take its toll on him and he started to weaken. William began to drive on, holding his pace along with David.
At 21.75 miles William went through in 1 hour 53 mins, David 1hour 54 mins 55 secs and Sean 1 hour 58 mins 34 secs and called it a day in his first marathon. Sean will have learned a lot about the marathon distance in terms of preparation.
William Maunsell powered on at personal best pace to finish fourth in the mass race and 15th overall in the elite race in a time of 2 hours 16 min 33 sec. David was 13th in the mass race and 21st home in elite field in a solid 2 hours 19 mins 22 secs, three minutes outside his personal best. Well done to the boys on their good runs. Onwards and upwards.
