Illness brings Tipperary cyclist Sam Bennett's Tour de France to an end

Sam Bennett has been forced to withdraw from the Tour de France

Illness has brought Tipperary cyclist Sam Bennett's Tour de France to a premature end.

He was cut adrift from the peloton in the early stages of Wednesday's 17th stage. In danger of missing the time cut in the race, he eventually pulled to the side of the road after 90 kilometres of racing.

Despite suffering from illness for several days, the Carrick-on-Suir rider finished fourth in the sprint into Nîmes on Tuesday, in the final sprint stage of the event. 

The Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale cyclist rode in the Tour de France this year for the first time since 2020, when he won the green jersey and two stages.
