The people of Fethard are holding their very first scarecrow festival this Halloween

From Sunday 11, the community of Fethard is hoping to put on their scariest display yet with the town’s inaugural Scarecrow Festival.

Locals are encouraged to start thinking now about their plans, for ultimate judging on October 30. There will be separate categories for children and adults, and more may be announced.

As the very first one, organisers admit already “this is completely new territory for us and, if we’re being honest, we’re probably going to learn a lot along the way!”

Nevertheless, it’s full spooky steam ahead, for the display of scarecrows along the main street in Fethard.

‘Start thinking, planning, building, painting, stuffing and creating your scarecrow! Your scarecrow can be free-standing or made so that it can be securely tied to a street pole.

‘Imagine walking up the Main Street in October and seeing it packed with scarecrows — funny ones, scary ones, clever ones, colourful ones, traditional ones and maybe a few that make absolutely no sense whatsoever! The more people who get involved, the better it will be.

‘This is our first year, so let’s see what we can do together and hopefully make the Fethard Scarecrow Festival something that grows bigger and better every year. So get the thinking caps on, start gathering your old clothes, straw, cardboard, paint and whatever else you can find… LET’S SEE WHAT FETHARD CAN COME UP WITH!

‘We’re also meeting with our judges this week to discuss the competition and get their thoughts. They may recommend that we introduce some additional categories, so we’ll see what they come up with! And just to be clear, our judges will be completely independent and will have no connection whatsoever to the organisers”.

Full details, rules and judging categories will be announced by the end of this week.
