There was an air of poignant celebration on Sunday morning, 11th May in the Church of St. Joseph & St. Brigid, Bothar na Naomh as the congregation gathered to pay tribute to its recently retired sacristan, Helen Galvin. As sacristan, Helen went about her duties with the utmost ease, effortlessly and respectfully, just some of the values which Fr. James Purcell spoke about in his homily during the mass. This was Helen’s vocation, her calling to serve God and her community in Bothar na Naomh and further afield. She was ably assisted for over twelve years by her late husband Paul. Indeed, Helen was more than just a sacristan, she also had an attentive ear for those who wanted a quite word. For those who needed caring, her watchful eyes and gentle manner ensured Bothar na Naomh was always homely and welcoming. And that caring spirit nurtured the faith in her family who were present to share in the Parish celebration to mark Helen’s retirement. When Paul went to his eternal reward, Brendan Ryan was gratefully on hand to assist Helen in her vocation until she made the decision to retire as sacristan of in Bothar na Naomh church.

It was only fitting then, that members of Thurles Parish Pastoral Team (PPT) marked the occasion of Helen’s retirement by making a presentation to her on behalf of Thurles Parish, and especially on behalf of her many friends and colleagues here in Bothar na Naomh.

Sean Ryan, from the PPT presented Helen with a lamp, which is inscribed as follows.

‘Helen, In appreciation of your generous service to the faith community of Bothar na Naomh, Thurles Parish.’
There were also presentations from the PPT to Helen made by Fr. Vincent Stapleton, resident priest in Bothar na Naomh, and Mary Butler member of the PPT.

Afterwards, to celebrate with Helen and her family, there were light refreshments in Lámh Chúnta. We thank Sr. Mary Barry and her team of helpers for the welcome and hospitality provided on the morning.
