Tipperary TDs welcome new affordable homes in Nenagh

Tipperary TDs Alan Kelly and Ryan O'Meara have welcomed the announcement of 31 new affordable homes for Nenagh, with the development in Tyone expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2027.

The development will comprise 29 three-bedroom houses and two four-bedroom houses and will be delivered through Tipperary County Council's affordable housing scheme, now referred to as Starter Homes.

Deputy Ryan O'Meara confirmed the expected completion timeframe, saying the homes were expected to be completed by Quarter 3 2027, according to Tipperary County Council.

Welcoming the announcement, Deputy Alan Kelly said: "Delighted to let everybody know that 31 new affordable homes are going to be built here in Nenagh."

He thanked Tipperary County Council for pursuing the development and said the homes would be "extremely important" for people in Nenagh and the surrounding areas.

Deputy Kelly said: "These are extremely important homes that are going to be affordable and available for people around Nenagh and surrounds in the coming years."

He added that the development was something he had committed to before the last General Election, saying: "I fought and fought for this with my Labour colleagues, with Louise Morgan Walsh, supporting Tipperary County Council, and now we know that 31 new houses are going to be built."

Nenagh Labour councillor Louise Morgan Walsh also welcomed the announcement, saying: "I welcome this news. It's fantastic news for Nenagh. These are badly needed homes and affordable homes."

She also congratulated Tipperary County Council, adding: "I would like to congratulate Tipperary County Council and all their hard work in ensuring that this will be delivered."

Deputy Ryan O'Meara welcomed the approval of the 31 Starter Homes, explaining how the scheme is designed to help prospective buyers bridge the gap between their savings and deposit, their mortgage and the market price of a house.

He said: "These 31 new Starter Homes are essentially the new name for the affordable housing schemes being brought across the country."

Explaining the purpose of the scheme, Deputy O'Meara said: "This scheme is designed to bridge the gap between your deposit, your savings and your mortgage and what the market rate of a house is in a particular area."

He said the development would have "a really important impact on the housing market in Nenagh".

Deputy O'Meara also thanked Minister for Housing James Browne for his work on affordable housing nationally and said he wanted to see further schemes delivered across Tipperary.

"We have more schemes we want to get across the line, right across Tipperary, right across north Tipperary, and more into Nenagh," he said.

He added: "We need all of it. We need more of it and I will continue to work on it."
