Tipperary council district has acquired mobile pump for use in flooding emergencies

Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District has obtained the pump to support emergency flooding response operations that arise throughout the district
Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District has secured a mobile pump that can be deployed to remove flooding arising in communities after severe weather.
The pump has been obtained to support emergency response operations in the council district stretching from Carrick-on-Suir in the far south of the county to Ballinure.
District Administrator Marie Cox told the district's monthly meeting the pump was a critical machine for the council to have available to go wherever it's needed in the district.
“The pump will enhance the municipal district's capacity to respond to localised flooding and assist in protecting homes, businesses, infrastructure and community facilities,” she informed councillors in her report to the meeting.
District Engineer Michael Scully, meanwhile, updated councillors on the work carried out by the council to ensure Carrick-on-Suir town is ready to respond to any flooding threat over the winter months.
He told them the pumps in the flood prevention system have been serviced and a flood gate was fixed.
Alongside this, council engineers and town supervisors have put in place an inspection regime for the flood prevention scheme in the town.
Mr Scully said the control panels in the council's pumps system were at the end of their life and the local authority has begun a procurement process to replace them over the next few years.
He also reported that a contractor will be clearing drains in the Mill Street area of the town over the next few weeks. Work was also taking place to clean gullies around the town.
Carrick Municipal District Cathaoirleach Cllr Kieran Bourke said Mr Scully's report filled him with confidence that the council is really on top of flooding issues in Carrick-on-Suir. “It's great to hear all the control panels will be upgraded,” he added.
Fellow Carrick-on-Suir Cllr David Dunne also welcomed the council's flood prevention works and noted the residents of Markievicz Terrace at Mill Street in Carrick-on-Suir will sleep well at night knowing the council has a mobile flood pump.
