Martin ‘Musha’ Maher was presented with the Dan Breen Cup after Thurles Sarsfields’ win over Moycarkey Borris

Last week, Thurles Sarsfields Club President, Martin “Musha” Maher received a special visit from the Dan Breen Cup. The visit comes in the wake of Sarsfields’ 1-19 to 1-11 victory over Moycarkey-Borris at FBD Semple Stadium earlier this month.

The cup was brought to Musha’s home by Tommy Barrett, John Maher, Pat Bracken and Pádraic Maher.

For the group, handing the cup over to Musha was a poignant reminder of the enduring legacy that underpins the club’s modern success. Now serving as the proud President of Thurles Sarsfields, a role he took over in 2017 following the passing of his lifelong friend Mickey ‘The Rattler’ Byrne.

Born into local hurling royalty as the son of the great 1930s Tipperary stalwart Paddy

‘Whitehead’ Maher, Musha forged a spectacular legacy of his own on the playing field.

Renowned for his positional intelligence and clinical accuracy as a star forward in the iconic blue jersey, his career yielded an astonishing haul of 9 Tipperary Senior Hurling Championship medals.

Musha also captured a Senior Football County Championship medal in 1960 playing with the divisional outfit Thurles Crokes, alongside three consecutive Mid Tipperary senior football titles between 1960 and 1962.

On the inter-county stage, he reached the absolute pinnacle of the sport, winning a National Hurling League medal with Tipperary in 1957 followed by an All-Ireland Senior Hurling medal in 1958.

One of his proudest hours came in 1961, when he captained his beloved Thurles Sarsfields to both Mid and County senior success.

Beyond his playing days, his contribution never wavered.

He served as a trusted selector for years, worked tirelessly as a gate checker for Mid Tipperary and Tipperary County Board for over 60 years, and was justly inducted into the Mid Tipperary GAA Hall of Fame in 2018.

As the Dan Breen Cup rested in the hands of the 1961 winning captain, it bridged a gap of generations.

For manager Pádraic Maher and the club delegation, sharing the club’s 37th senior title with a man who has given decades of loyal service to the Blues was a true highlight of the championship celebrations.
