Costigan's Pharmacy in Tipperary Town is set to change hands

A busy west Tipperary pharmacy is set to get some new owners in the coming weeks.

Costigan's Pharmacy in Tipperary Town will change ownership, with a new couple coming in to take over the running of the popular pharmacy.

Costigan's has been running for over 70 years, after being bought by Nance and Bob Costigan in 1954.

Since 1995, the pharmacy has been run by daughter Siobhan Costigan, on her return from England.

In 2006, Costigan's opened a second branch on Blind Street in Tipperary Town, in addition to their busy Main Street premises.

In a post on social media, Siobhan Costigan outlined her plans to sell the pharmacy and spend more time with her family.

"In 2018 we built the new Kylecourt Clinic and we moved the pharmacy from Unit 3 into the bigger Unit 4. In 2020, just as the pandemic hit we merged the Main street pharmacy with the Blind street pharmacy and got the whole team under one roof.

"For me it has been a lifetime of pharmacy and just short of thirty years running the business. None of it would have been possible without my husband John holding the fort at home and all the people who have worked with me over the years," she said.

Paying tribute to the people of Tipperary Town and surrounding areas, the popular pharmacist said that the town, while facing its problems, has a strong community.

"And definitely none of it would have been possible without the people of Tipp town and surrounds - what an amazing community.

"The powers-that-be have neglected and strangled the town but here we all are, still achieving," she said.

New owners John Kennedy and Lynsay Moore are set to take over the running of the busy pharmacy in the coming weeks, and there are hopes that "with their younger and fresher eyes they will see many new ways to continue our legacy," the post on social media said.

"I hope I get an opportunity to meet most of our patients and carers in the pharmacy over the next few weeks and to say thank you," Siobhan wrote.

"Thank you to my family, to the fantastic people of the area, and always remembering the loved ones we have lost. Finally, a huge thank you to the hardest working team you could meet," the post said.
