In the peaceful early hours of May 10, 2025, a special tribute lit up the fields of Aherlow as the local community gathered in memory of Niall O’Connell.
Held on the Hennessy family farm, the event—fittingly named Darkness Into Light: Aherlow Style—brought together neighbours, friends, and family in support of Pieta House, a charity dedicated to suicide prevention and mental health support.

A powerful sight unfolded as 17 tractors and balers moved in unison across a mowed field, symbolising the strength and unity of a community coming together through grief, remembrance, and hope.
The land, owned by Sean, John, and David Hennessy, came alive as nearly 90 people gathered at 4:00am, embodying the spirit of the national Darkness Into Light movement.
After the work in the field, a warm and heartfelt breakfast was served.
The food was lovingly prepared by Cáit, along with Emma, Niall’s sister, and a cousin, offering nourishment and comfort to those in attendance.
Young attendees also shared their reflections.
Katie, who admired the event’s tribute to Niall, said she wished she had joined her father, Sean, up on the tractor.
Gráinne called the morning an “excellent experience,” noting how meaningful it was for everyone to see Betsy, Niall’s beloved horse.
The event was more than symbolic.
A significant amount of silage was harvested, reflecting the hard work and dedication behind the occasion.
Most importantly, over €1,000 was raised in support of Pieta House, contributing directly to vital mental health services.

Both Katie and Gráinne left the morning with a powerful shared message: “Always talk to people when you need help at the earliest opportunity. A problem shared is a problem halved.”
Darkness Into Light – Aherlow Style was more than a memorial.
It was a testament to community, love, and the ongoing importance of open conversations around mental health.
In remembering Niall, his family and friends have planted seeds of hope for others.
