It was lovely to see the special ceremony and celebration taking place last weekend as the Coptic Christian Orthodox Community in Cahir celebrated Easter.

This Oriental Church was founded by Saint Mark the evangelist in year 60AD and it's one of many apostolic churches spread all over the world.

This Church came to Ireland around 1970 under his Grace Bishop Antony and there are now there 8 Coptic Churches, one Convent and one Monastery.

The church in Cahir had the honour of a visit by Pope Tawadros II, Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of Saint Mark last year.

The congregation celebrated Good Friday last Friday with their priests Father Kyrillos Hanna and Father Ebifanios Ava Mina.

As a mark of respect all windows were covered and on the day and the mass lasted 6 hours. There was a very welcoming atmosphere on the day and it was very much a family orientated event with children happily taking part in the prayers and the air was filled with the aroma of incense.

There was mass on the Saturday night and Sunday also to celebrate the Resurrection when the Choir attended and a barbecue was held to finish off the Easter weekend events.

The children informed me when I asked that they got plenty of Easter eggs too!
