Victory for Tipperary girls at rugby blitzes in Limerick

Rockwell College students were victorious in Munster junior and senior 11’s rugby blitzes at the University of Limerick recently.

In the senior competition, Rockwell won their group by defeating Abbeyfeale (Limerick) 4-0, St. Mary’s (Nenagh) 5-0 and Salesian College (Limerick) 8-0.

Rockwell then beat Presentation Thurles 4-0 in the final. Rockwell took the match to a much vaunted Presentation side, with Jill Shanahan’s pace and Claire Bennett’s carrying - ably supported by Faye Dowling and Ellie O’Sullivan - seeing them over the line.

In the Junior competition, Rockwell overcame St. Anne’s Killaloe (Clare) 4-1, St. Mary’s (Limerick) 3-1 and Abbeyfeale 7-0 to qualify for the final. They went on to beat Coláiste na Sceilge (Kerry) 5-0 in the final, with tries coming from Lucy Murphy, Orlaith Breen, Caoimhe O’Connor, Karen Bennett and Kate Flannery. Their coaches Polly Murphy and Patrique Kelly are very proud of ‘the great achievement for a very sporting group of committed girls’.
