A well-known local family, living in Westmeath but with strong Tipperary connections, reached the final of Ireland's Fittest Family on RTÉ recently.

The Mullingar-based family of six each have a history in individual and team sports, namely GAA, running, triathlons, golf and tennis and there was strong local interest in Tipperary too as friends and family watched the show each week to see how they got on.

Taking part in the games were father, Tommy Carr, and three of his children and the fit family made it all the way to the final which aired on Sunday evening last.

62-year-old Tommy, a brother of Tipperary GAA legend Declan Carr, is a strength and conditioning coach and former Gaelic footballer who once played for the Dublin county team.

He is also the CEO of Pallet Express.

Elizabeth is 30-years-old and a high-performance triathlete who ranks number one in Ireland. She is a Captain in the Irish Defence Forces and is currently studying for a Masters in Science.

Gareth is a 27-year-old Corporate Finance Analyst. He used to play intercounty football and is now a keen golfer.

Simon is 25-years-old and works in Sports Management. He was an Irish former professional tennis player who also played Gaelic and rugby.

The Carrs ultimately just narrowly lost out to the McKennas from Monaghan in the final.

The final was at Beyond the Trees in Avondale, Wicklow, and the innovative challenges involved carrying chunky weights from the bottom of the 38 metre high tower to the top, the brutal ‘Back to the Wall’, and the classic obstacle course, which was where the Mullingar family just lost out, despite a spirited performance.

Simon Carr said: "It was just an incredible effort from all of us. I think we all left it out there and came up just short. It was disappointing in the moment, but it was an incredible experience, being able to compete with the family, and I think I can speak for all of us and say we thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience, and we won’t forget it."
