The 50th anniversary of the filming of Stanley Kubrick's Oscar winning film, Barry Lyndon is to be celebrated with a photographic exhibition and organised hike of the locations near Rathgormack where scenes for the film were shot.

The two events are part of the four-day Comeraghs Wild Festival that runs from Thursday, July 10 to Sunday, July 13.

Barry Lyndon, based on William Thackeray’s 1844 novel, tells the story of the rise and fall of an Irish rogue. Scenes were filmed across Ireland, including the Comeragh Mountains.

On Saturday, July 12, Rathgormack Ramblers guide Michael O’Donoghue will take hikers on the Barry Lyndon Experience Loop Walk that will take you to locations where some of the scenes of the film starring Ryan O'Neal were shot 50 years ago. The hike starts from Glenpatrick Picnic Area on Carney's Road near Kilsheelan at 10am.

It will be a 8km moderate, forest road/track walk, suitable for most fitness levels with some uneven surfaces.

Hikers are advised to bring a phone, water, snack, rain gear, sun cream and comfortable walking shoes. It costs €5 to take part and you can book your place through the Comeragh Wilds Festival website.

A photographic exhibition about the filming of Barry Lyndon around the Comeragh Mountains will take place at Rathgormack Community & Hiking Centre on Sunday, July 13 at 7.30pm.

All are welcome to attend, particularly those who were involved in the filming of the movie in Rathgormack, to chat and reminisce over a cuppa.
