WATCH: Cashel M8 fuel protesters voice anger over rising costs and government inaction

Protesters demand immediate measures as rising fuel prices put pressure on businesses and families

Protesters gathered on the M8 motorway outside Cashel to voice their concerns over rising fuel costs, as part of a wider wave of demonstrations seen across the country in recent days.

The protests, which have involved convoys of trucks, tractors and other vehicles, have brought traffic to a standstill in a number of locations, including Dublin and several regional towns.

Participants pointed to the increasing strain on businesses and households, particularly in sectors heavily reliant on fuel such as transport and agriculture.

At the Cashel protest, those taking part spoke about the day-to-day impact of higher prices, describing mounting pressure on their livelihoods.

Those taking part at Cashel spoke about the day-to-day impact of higher prices on their businesses and families. Through conversations with protesters, a consistent theme emerged, they want immediate and sustained government intervention to ease the cost burden.

The backdrop to the protests is continued volatility in global energy markets, largely linked to the conflict in the Middle East. On April 8 a temporary ceasefire was agreed between the United States and Iran, intended to halt hostilities for two weeks and to create space for diplomatic talks aimed at securing peace and a reopening of the critical Strait of Hormuz, through which a large share of the world’s oil passes.

While the Government has already introduced a package of supports in recent weeks, ministers have indicated a cautious approach to any further measures in the short term.

Through conversations at the protest, participants outlined both their frustrations and the steps they believe are needed, highlighting a growing sense that further action may follow if conditions do not improve.
