The repair and restoration of the 18th century clock at West Gate began last month

Repair and restoration works on Carrick-on-Suir’s 18th century town clock are underway with two of the clock’s faces now working again, Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District’s monthly meeting was informed.

This was the positive update District Administrator Marie Cox gave to Carrick MD councillors on the project that is being funded by a €9,000 Built Heritage Investment Scheme grant with a further €10,000 investment from the Council’s own coffers.

Ms Cox said safety works on the town clock building at West Gate commenced on September 3 to enable safe access to the clock. The works couldn’t commence until then due to nesting birds.

She reported that two faces of the clock are now back working but the third one facing towards Carrickbeg is still not working and requires detailed examination.

Ms Cox outlined that the contractor is working on securing safe access to the clock tower roof to carry out further conservation.

A clock restorer is to be engaged to work on the clock’s chime and fixing the third face.

Carrick-on-Suir Town Clock was erected in 1784 and is one of the town’s most well-known landmarks.

It is a recorded monument in the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage, classified as being of “regional importance and of special archaeological, architectural, historical and social interest”.
