Tipperary County Council has stepped in to reclaim the former Healthcare Centre in Emly, infusing fresh purpose into a building that was once at the heart of the community.

Cllr John O’Heney revealed the Council’s vision to turn the single-storey building into desperately needed homes. After its services moved to the HSE Primary Care Centre in Tipperary Town, the Emly site sat idle for years, quietly awaiting a new chapter.

According to the Independent Councillor, the process to change the rules in the current County Development Plan to allow this new use has already started.

Cllr O’Heney thanked the HSE and Tipperary County Council for joining forces to breathe life back into the building, which is set to become social housing. The Emly Community Council welcomed the decision to restore a cherished local landmark. At the same time, work has begun to bring over 20 long-abandoned homes in Glen Court Estate back to life after nearly twenty years of emptiness.

Cllr John O'Heney's statement

“A very positive update regarding the future of Emly Healthcare Centre, and I am now able to confirm that it has been officially purchased by Tipperary County Council, with the view to it being turned into residential use.

“This once-vibrant Healthcare facility had been out of use in recent years as the HSE has transferred all Medical Treatment to the new Primary Care Centre in Tipperary Town.

“Getting this building back in use has been a project I have been advocating for and working on for several years now.

“More work is now taking place to put a change in the County Development Plan so it can be fully utilised, but today is very much a step in the right direction.

“A sincere word of appreciation to everyone involved with this project in the HSE and in the Tipperary County Council for getting this over the line and to this point.

“Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

“Cllr John O'Heney.”
