Comeragh College student Danny Nugent with the Junior Category award he won in the Tipperary Student Enterprise Programme Final in Thurles with his proud dad Ritchie.
A hurley repair enterprise run by a Junior Cert student at Carrick-on-Suir’s Comeragh College has been chosen to represent Tipperary in the Student Enterprise Programme National Final next month.
Danny Nugent was the Junior Category winner in the Tipperary county final of the competition at TUS Thurles Campus a few weeks ago and will represent the county in the national final at the Mullingar Park Hotel on Thursday, May 7.
The enterprising student, who is son of Ritchie and Sandra Nugent from Rathgormack, beat off stiff competition at county level to reach the national final.
A total of 200 students in 65 teams from 24 Tipperary secondary schools took part in the recent county final at TUS Thurles Campus.
This is the second student enterprise competition Danny has excelled in with his hurley repair business that he runs from the garage of his home.
In May last year he won the top prize in the inaugural Journey of an Idea Student Entrepreneurial Programme run by Explore Carrick-on-Suir in collaboration with Carrick-on-Suir’s secondary schools.
He told The Nationalist at the time he planned to spend the €2,000 prize money he won in the competition on purchasing a bandsaw and sanding belt for his business.
Danny’s hurley repair operation has continued to go from strength to strength over the past 10 months.
Comeragh College Principal Kevin Langton said the school was “extremely proud” of Danny’s success in winning the overall Junior Category prize in the county final and qualifying for the national final.
“Danny’s achievement reflects his willingness to get involved, his obvious flare for enterprise and his hard work.
“He is a really good ambassador for our school, for his family and his former primary school Rathgormack NS.”
Danny will be joined by county final Intermediate Category winner David Miron from Coláiste Dún Iascaigh in Cahir and Senior Category winner Aidan Humphries of Rockwell College in representing Tipperary schools in the Student Enterprise Programme National Final.
