Some of the musicians attending the new trad session g orup at the Halfway House
A new music group, known as the Second Sunday Steady Sessions, started up on the second Sunday of January this year in Phelan’s Halfway House, Rathronan.
The idea of this group, which is being facilitated by the Powerstown/Lisronagh branch of Comhaltas, is to encourage adults and older teenagers (16 plus) to play traditional music in a session where they feel comfortable with the speed at which the music is being played and with the familiarity of the tunes.
To this end, there is a list of about 15 tunes, available on the Powerstown/Lisronagh Comhaltas Facebook page, which will make up the content of each session which runs from 6.30-7.30.
For those who want to expand their repertoire or maybe play at a slightly faster pace, there is the option to stay on beyond this time for a regular session.
OPPORTUNITY
So, if you are a bit rusty in your playing or have taken up playing music later in life or even just find the speed of some sessions intimidating, this is a chance to come together with like-minded people and enjoy the tunes at a leisurely pace in a welcoming and sympathetic atmosphere.
The first session saw people travel from as far afield as Waterford and the mix of people, instruments and musical experience made it a thoroughly enjoyable evening.
The SSSS will be held at the same venue on the second sunday of every month at the Halfway at 6.30. All welcome.
