Tipperary's largest town ‘is crying out’ for proper taxi rank

'An element of safety' about taxis

Tipperary's largest town ‘is crying out’ for proper taxi rank

Taxis also provided “eyes” in the town late at night, said Cllr John FitzGerald

“The nighttime economy in Clonmel is crying out for it, there isn’t a cab to be got,” Cllr John FitzGerald stated at a meeting of Clonmel Borough District when he appealed for the provision of a taxi rank in the town centre.

He said there were some very good hackney services that did a very good job in the town. However, the town still doesn’t have a designated taxi rank or taxis with “lit up” signs.

Things had changed since Covid, as the amount of hackney drivers and cars had reduced.

Cllr FitzGerald said he had spoken to some of the hackney operators and they would be happy to have a conversation about this.

Taxis also provided “eyes” in the town late at night, and there was an element of safety about them.

He said that the town bus was doing a great job but it covered specific locations.

Cllr FizGerald’s call was supported by Cllr Richie Molloy, who said that once you had children socialising in the town late at night you realised there was a need for a taxi rank.

A dedicated space for taxis would make a huge difference.

Official taxis that were lit up and properly regulated would make it very safe.

Cllr Molloy said there were hundreds of people around Parnell Street and O’Connell Street once the night clubs finished.

District Administrator Carol Creighton said there was legislation about providing a taxi rank. But she had no problem coming to the table for a meeting to improve the service for the town.
