A special ceremony was held at Muintir na Tíre headquarters in Tipperary Town on Friday, October 17, marking two key moments for the organisation — the planting of a commemorative tree and the unveiling of a plaque presented by former National President Martin Quinn.

The event celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Community Alert Programme, a partnership between Muintir na Tíre and An Garda Síochána that has promoted safety, neighbourliness, and community spirit across Ireland since 1985.
Cllr Roger Kennedy, Cathaoirleach of the Municipal District, joined Muintir na Tíre Board Member Paddy Fitzpatrick in planting the tree, symbolising growth, renewal, and the enduring values of trust and cooperation. “The tree we plant today will grow and flourish, just as our communities do when nurtured by kindness and cooperation,” said Cllr Kennedy.
Following the planting, Martin Quinn unveiled a plaque recognising Muintir na Tíre’s decades of service in community development, social inclusion, and volunteerism. The plaque also honours the legacy of founder Canon John Hayes and his family’s lasting support. “This plaque is not just a symbol of the past, but of the living spirit of Muintir na Tíre,” said Mr Quinn.
The ceremony concluded with thanks to all who have contributed to Community Alert’s success — volunteers, Gardaí, and local coordinators — as well as Tipperary County Council and Community Garda John Hennessy. Among those in attendance were Deputy Michael Murphy, Cllr John Crosse, and representatives from TASK Community Care and Synergy Security Solutions.
The new tree and plaque now stand at Muintir na Tíre HQ as lasting symbols of connection, vigilance, and community spirit, celebrating 40 years of dedicated service and looking ahead to many more.
