The project is planned for the Silvermines area of Tipperary

A new hydroelectric facility is being planned for Tipperary that will help support Ireland’s renewable energy targets.

The project was submitted in may for a pre-application stage to An Coimisiún Pleanála.

This stage of the planning process is designed to identify issues, improve the quality of the application, and ensure the proposal qualifies as a Strategic Infrastructure Development (SID).

The facility would be located in the townlands of Castlecranna, Garryard West, Gorteenadiha, Gortshaneroe, Shallee (Coughlan), Shallee (White), and Shallee Upper And Lower, in County Tipperary.

The project will consist of two 220kV substations and a grid connection to national the transmission network, as well as all associated infrastructure of the project.

Planners of the project are Siga-Hydro Limited, who are also the company behind another similar project described as ‘Tipperary’s most significant hydroelectric initiative’.

The €650m Silvermines Hydro Project will be located at a former mine site in North Tipperary and it will store excess energy and provide enough daily capacity to power 185,000 households.

An Coimisiún Pleanála will now investigate whether the newest project can advance to a planning application stage and the case is due to be decided by September 24 2026.
