Cllr Mark Fitzgerald from Cloneen was the fifth councillor elected in Carrick-on-Suir LEA
Fine Gael Cllr Mark Fitzgerald has become the fifth and final councillor to be elected in the Carrick-on-Suir LEA following the fifth count, which was the distribution of the eliminated Irish Freedom Party candidate Martin Murphy's votes.
The Cloneen man's re-election was greeted with cheers from his family, friends and supporters at the Tipperary Count Centre in the Presentation Secondary School in Thurles. He received 48 transfers from Murphy's 330 votes bringing him to 1,545, which is 37 votes over the 1508 quota.
Mullinahone Independent Kevin O'Meara, however, has lost his council seat. He received 149 transfers from Martin Murphy, who also resides in Mullinahone, bringing his vote to 1,319 placing him sixth of the seven candidates.
Cllr Fitzgerald commiserated with Kevin O'Meara on losing his seat and wished him well. He described Kevin as a great colleague and friend who had been a great support to him on the council over the past five years.
