Abuse towards staff at General Election polling stations will not be tolerated

Incidents will be notified to gardaí and followed up

Abuse towards staff at General Election polling stations will not be tolerated

James Seymour, Returning Officer for the General Election in Tipperary

Hostility on the day of polling towards staff working at polling booths has increased in Tipperary.
In advance of polling day Returning Officer James Seymour said anybody engaging in verbal or physical abuse towards staff at the polling stations would be dealt with by gardaí.

He said if such behaviour arose there would be formal complaints filed to gardáí and they would be followed up. James Seymour spoke about a disturbing incident that happened to him during polling day in the recent Local Elections in Tipperary.

“I was spat at by a person who was unhappy in the polling station and other staff throughout the county experienced issues on the day of voting. I have a duty to protect the staff,” said James Seymour.

“If somebody is not on the register they cannot be given a ballot paper in the polling station. People do get angry and upset when they realise they are not on it but there is nothing we can do about that. The staff can only work off the register that is in front of them,” he said.

“People have a job to do at the polling stations. On this occasion there will be formal complaints made if there is any verbal or physical abuse shown towards staff,” insisted the Returning Officer.
