The victorious Cahir Park Golf Club team
The victory over County Cavan Golf Club last September by the club’s Pierce Purcell Shield team brought a first Men’s All-Ireland title back to Cahir Park.
The achievement has also earned the club an Annerville sports award, sponsored by Bulmers, and which will be presented by the Tipperary United Sports Panel at its annual function on Saturday night, January 25.
The matches in Gort last September teed off in good conditions and it became apparent early on, with Cahir up in two matches and down in two matches, that it would be a closely-fought affair.
On the back nine holes the rain arrived and conditions became very tough. Cavan won a match, quickly followed by Cahir winning a match. Cavan struck again, and with the Ulster team now 2-1 up overall all eyes turned to the final match, with Cahir’s pair holding a narrow lead.
The Cavan pair won the 17th hole to tie up the match. Cahir’s John Molloy and John Cashman needed to win the 18th hole to force a playoff. A great drive and second shot in driving wind and rain set things up for John Cashman to chip close, and John Molloy to hole the par putt, winning the hole and the match.
Cahir’s John Mitchell and Willie Morrissey made their way to the first hole for the sudden death. Both pairs got on the green in two but Cavan three-putted, leaving the door open for Willie Morrissey to convert a par putt to secure a historic victory and claim the Pierce Purcell Shield for Cahir Park.
It was a very proud occasion for the club and their success was adequate compensation for the disappointment of the previous year, when Cahir were narrowly beaten in the All-Ireland final.
