Rubbish dumping near site of 1798 Rebellion battle in county Tipperary is condemned

The dumping of domestic waste near the historically important Carraigmoclear Hill where one of the 1798 United Irishmen Rebellion battles took place, has been roundly condemned.

Carrick-on-Suir Sinn Féin Cllr David Dunne and Clonmel Sinn Féin activist Dean McGrath said they have notified Tipperary County Councilil of the illegal refuse dumping at the Carraigmoclear, which is located next to Slievenamon.

The dumped waste was discovered near the hill in the Grangemockler and Mullinahone areas last weekend.

“What was discovered over the weekend is an affront to anyone who puts any value in our environment,” said Cllr Dunne.

“Anyone who chooses to dump their household waste illegally shows their total disregard for their surroundings, and also for anyone who lives near or uses this area for recreation.

“Deputy Martin Browne has contacted Tipperary County Council, informing them of the dumping site, and, alongside my colleagues, I urge anyone who witnessed this being carried out to contact the council immediately. We must stamp this type of practice out as soon as it appears.

Cllr Dunne said it was disheartening to see that whoever is responsible for this act of vandalism has no respect for an area of such historical significance as this is, given that it is close to the site of the Carraigmoclear Battle of the Irish Rebellion of 1798.

Dean McGrath pointed out that the battle's 225th anniversary is on July 23 and 24.
