March4Tipp protest in 2018 in Tipperary Town
March4Tipp has announced that the group is hanging up their marching boots.
A statement from the group says that this was a decision that was not reached lightly, and they are not taking this action with a sense of "the job is done now" but rather their decision is a personal one for each of those that are in the group.
"We have put years of hard work into trying to improve our town and wider community. That takes a toll. In an era of social media, 'putting our heads above the parapet' can attract hostility and often personal attacks.
"We weathered that for the greater good. However, every source of energy eventually depletes. We are acutely aware that Tipperary Town and its environs continues to experience significant challenges.
"Our earnest hope is that our work over the past 5 or more years has at least moved the situation forward, towards a better future for our community.
"Some of our members will still be actively involved in local groups, where they will continue to have the best interest of the town at heart in its regeneration.
"While there have been lows as well as highs, we would like to focus on the highs, one being the thousands in our community who marched with a single voice, to call out to Government to address the needs of our community.
"People from all walks of life and of all ages came together in delivering a truly historic community message to the leaders of our country.
"All of you who marched got that attention, with the Taoiseach, Tánaiste and many TDs talking about Tipperary Town in the Dáil.
"Tipperary Town now features prominently in Leaders Questions, which is down to your efforts on that historic day in 2018.
"Our town was featured on the 6pm news, the 9pm news and on Prime Time.
"We have no doubt that your actions as a community forced the creation of the Task Force, which is working hard to address the issues you raised.
"Thank you to our local and national representatives who are keeping our struggle in the minds of those who have the power to help us.
"Most importantly we want to thank all of you who supported the marches and the other actions that we took. Our ambition was to be your voice. Now it is for others to take up that responsibility and privilege" concludes the statement."
