Tipperary pitch and putt success as two local players lift national titles on home soil

Stephen Shoer receives the national men's trophy from Mark Keohane, president, Pitch and Putt Ireland

Riverdale Pitch and Put Club has been congratulated by Cllr Seamus Morris for the successful hosting of the National Ladies’ and Men’s Scratch stroke play championships at the weekend.

“Riverdale Pitch and Putt course is one of the best kept sports facilities in Nenagh. There isn’t a day that some of the small band of volunteers aren’t at the facility looking after the greens and flowers. It is a very ambitious committee,” he said.

Cllr Morris said that he knew how hard the volunteers worked on the facility to make it ready to host such a prestigious competition. The national organisation were so impressed with the facility that they are open to Nenagh hosting it again very soon .

“This is the type of sports tourism that I have always encouraged as it b rings much needed footfall to the town and I was happy to put the club forward for two different types of grants which they were granted. The town was teaming with contestants and their families and supporters for the weekend.

“To top off the weekend it was fantastic to see Stephen Shoer from the local club win the national stroke play competition. The Shoers have a long tradition with the club including as volunteers so it was great that Stephen brought the trophy home for the club,” said Cllr Morris.

The ladies' Intermediate title went to Nenagh woman Margaret Hennessy, who shot a great score of 1 under par in testing conditions to take a four-shot victory over clubmate Margaret Forde.
