Can you teach an old dog new tricks?
Yes, you certainly can.
Here are some tips on training from Tara, who works closely with our rescue dogs.
Training offers them one-on-one enrichment. It’s fun and helps immensely with their rehoming.
Training your dog yourself may seem like a daunting task. Yet, when done correctly, it can be fun and a bonding experience for you both.
Success lies in preparation. Planning your session and having everything you need to hand before you start sets you both up to get the most out of the experience.
Choose a time when you can provide a calm environment with no interruptions.
Each session should last no more than 10-25 minutes. This keeps it short and more likely your dog will stay engaged. Set a timer!
Choose the most delicious treats! We’re talking ham, chicken, sausages. Something your dog is going to really want. Just make sure it’s dog/puppy safe. Tiny pieces will do. It just needs to be yummy!
Begin by throwing a treat directly in front of you and wait for your dog to find it. The moment your dog eats the treat, respond with the word ‘GOOD’ immediately.
Timing is everything. Repeat this process eight or nine times until your dog knows what to expect.
This process is called charging. It ensures your dog learns the word ‘GOOD’ means they are doing a wonderful job!
To lure your dog into a sit, start by holding the treat above their head, just within their sight. Slowly move it back.
Ask for the ‘SIT’ only once.
Avoid repeating the word. Your dog may be inclined to sit naturally; sometimes, patience is your best friend. You may have to wait for your dog to sit on their own.
Either way, it is important to mark the behaviour immediately with ‘GOOD,’ followed by the cue word ‘SIT,’ paired with a treat.
Repeat as often as it takes for your dog to hear the cue word and offer the behaviour automatically.
Keep it simple and have fun!
