Most people in Tipperary who can work are in employment according to new figures

Most people in Tipperary who can work do work, according to new Census 2022 figures.

Census 2022 Profile seven shows that Tipperary had an eight percent unemployment rate in April 2022.

In the Premier County, 73,200 people were working, which is up 15% on the 2016 census.

Almost 6,200 were unemployed, down 44% on 2016 figures.

Tipperary Town had the highest percentage of long-term unemployed with 4.9% of the population over the age of 15.

Carrick-On-Suir followed closely behind at 4.3% and Roscrea at 4.2%.

Ballina had the lowest at 1.7% followed by Newport (2%) and Templemore and Clonmel both at 2.7%.

Retirement accounted for 24,000 people in Tipperary, a 22% increase.

Templemore had the highest percentage of retirement at 21% of the population over 15 years of age. Carrick-On-Suir followed at 20.9% and Thurles after at 20.4%.

Newport had the lowest at 10.3%.

Seven thousand, five- hundred and seventy-two people were on an illness or disability payment, an increase of 15%.

Fifty-six-thousand four-hundred people were employed full-time, while 11,400 held part-time jobs.

The labour force participation rate in Tipperary was 59% compared to 61% nationally. Labour force participation refers to the amount of people over the age of 15 who work.

Women accounted for 53% while men 65%.

WORK FROM HOME

Seventeen-thousand seven-hundred said they work from home some of the time, with 3,900 of those five days a week.

Those working from home one day a week came to 3,068 people, and 2,553 said two days a week.

INDUSTRY

The three biggest employers in Tipperary were the manufacturing industry, wholesale and retail and human health and social work.

Manufacturing accounted for 10,400 jobs, while wholesale, trade and retail came in just under at 9,100. Eight-thousand four- hundred people in Tipperary were employed in human health and social work.

The figures were released under Profile seven Employment, Occupations and Commuting from the Central Statistics Office.
