A riverbank cycle/walkway along the northern bank of the River Suir in county Kilkenny is one of the route options being investigated as part of an ongoing study into the feasibility of connecting the Suir Blueway with the Waterford Greenway.

Tipperary County Council has received the go ahead from its elected members to enter into a Section 85 Agreement with Kilkenny County Council to allow it investigate the feasibility of this route option that lies in the functional area of the Kilkenny local authority.

The council got the green light to proceed with its investigation into this route corridor at its December monthly meeting where Clonmel Fianna Fáil councillor Siobhán Ambrose proposed and her party colleague Cllr Roger Kennedy seconded the recommendation to enter into the Section 85 agreement with Kilkenny County Council.

Cllr Ambrose said the development of a recreational trail connecting the Suir Blueway that ends in Carrick-on-Suir with the Waterford Greenway at Kilmeaden would be a “game changer” for local tourism and the economy

This agreement will enable Tipperary County Council to investigate and assess the feasibility of developing the connecting walk/cycleway along a route corrider that crosses the River Suir at Fiddown and continues along the northern bank of the Suir in county Kilkenny.

Tipperary County Council is the lead authority for the feasibility study into developing a recreational trail connecting the Suir Blueway route along the banks of the Suir between Clonmel and Sean Healy Park in Carrick-on-Suir Suir and the Waterford Greenway that runs along an old rail line between Dungarvan and Waterford.

The feasibility study was begun in August 2022 and is being funded by Transport Infrastructure Ireland. Tipperary County Council’s Active Travel team is working with the TII, Waterford City & County Council, Kilkenny County Council and Tobins Consulting Engineers on the study.
