Tipperary County Council has purchased the final piece of land on the Mill Road to build the Thurles inner relief road.
Councillor Michéal Lowry confirmed the deal this week, saying the progression of this project will support the council’s argument to the Department of Transport for the inclusion of the bypass project in the National Development Plan.
“The progression of this vital project will be instrumental in the ongoing effort to ensure that the Thurles bypass project will be included in the review of the National Development Plan.

“At present, the Inner Relief Road is listed. However, securing a second Road Infrastructure Project in addition to this would be challenging.
“Deputy Michael Lowry has received a commitment on this from the Government. Therefore, it is anticipated that this project will now move in a timely manner,” said Cllr Lowry.
According to Cllr Lowry modelling for the Thurles Local Area Plan suggests that a second bridge could cut traffic in the town by 15%.
Also included in the deal is the land to complete the footpath from the Dublin Road to Ladyswell.
“The proposed footpath extension along Mill Road will also complete a safe walking route for the town while ensuring the safety of Thurles Gaels club members making their way to their grounds.
“I am delighted that the project can now move forward. I want to thank the landowner, Michael Ryan, for his willingness to facilitate this vital piece of infrastructure on reasonable and fair terms. I also want to acknowledge the contribution from James Meagher of Knight Frank Estate Agents and local auctioneer PJ Broderick, for their professional input and assistance in brokering the deal,” said Cllr Lowry.
Cllr Lowry also acknowledged Tipperary County Council CEO Joe MacGrath and roads director Liam Brett for their work.
Tipperary TD Michael Lowry said on social media this week that is “fantastic news” for Thurles.
“Following the intervention of Cllr Micheál Lowry and months of negotiation, Tipperary County Council has reached an agreement to purchase the final piece of land on the Mill Road required to construct the long-awaited Thurles inner relief road.
“Fantastic news for Thurles as the long-awaited Thurles inner relief road has taken a huge step forward Congratulations also to Micheál. All his hard work and commitment to this project over the last number of months have paid off,” said Deputy Lowry.
