Renowned Tipperary journalist wins Merit Award at Justice Media Awards

The Law Society of Ireland has announced the winners of the Justice Media Awards 2024 at an awards ceremony which took place at the Law Society on Thursday, June 20, 2024.

Ronan Dodd, recently retired Tipperary Star journalist, was awarded a merit certificate at the Justice Media Awards.

Dodd received the award in the Category 3: Print/Online Journalism (Local) category.

He was awarded for his piece "Restorative Justice: Giving a Voice to Victims and a Second Chance to Offenders."

President of the Law Society, Barry MacCarthy, said, “For over 30 years the Law Society has celebrated the best in legal journalism. We have immense pride in the Justice Media Awards and what they stand for. We are honoured to support journalism that promotes a greater public understanding of the law and our rights, legal literacy, and the legal system."

“The strength of the Justice Media Awards is only as good as its entrants. The Law Society is encouraged to see the standard and talent in Irish legal journalism continuing to expand," he said.

Ronan retired in February of this year, after five decades in journalism.

Not long before his recent retirement, he received the award for the local media online print category in the Justice Media Awards run by the Law Society of Ireland.

His award-winning report covered how mentally ill people are often criminalised for actions over which their illness gives them little or no control, resulting in them ending up before the courts as law breakers.

Having spent 50 years in the field, Ronan decided earlier this year to call an end to his long career, having worked with publications such as The Irish Press, The Wexford People, Ireland's Own and The Tipperary Star.
