Uisce Éireann completes €3m upgrade of wastewater treatment plant in county Tipperary town

The upgrade of Cahir's wastewater treatment plant means it can accommodate further growth of the town

Uisce Éireann has announced the completion of a €3 million upgrade to the wastewater treatment plant serving Cahir.

The utility says the project has significantly modernised and improved the performance and capacity of the plant and will accommodate further growth and development in the area.

It will also improve the quality of treated wastewater discharged into the River Suir and ensure compliance with wastewater regulation.

Speaking about the upgrade, Portfolio Manager at Uisce Éireann Paul Fallon said: “Cahir is a bustling town with a vibrant community and its many scenic attractions add to the town’s significance as a tourist destination.

"This investment by Uisce Éireann in the wastewater treatment plant will bring a host of benefits to the area including significantly improving water quality in the River Suir, as well as supporting better health and integrity of the environment. The upgrade will also ensure there is capacity available for future social and economic growth in the area."

Paul continued: ‘I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the community for their ongoing support and patience throughout the delivery of this vital wastewater project.”

The project was carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Murphy Process Engineering. The work involved expanding the capacity of the plant to handle more wastewater; additional stormwater storage; construction of a new settling tank, and ancillary works.

This is the latest in a series of several major investments in Tipperary by Uisce Éireann, who have invested over €134 million in the county in the past decade.

This includes a €19 million upgrade to wastewater infrastructure in Ballina and Newport, which is currently under construction; a €7 million upgrade to the Fethard Regional Water Supply Scheme; as well as an upgrade to Clonmel Water Supply which is due to progress shortly.

Uisce Éireann is responsible for delivering public drinking water and wastewater services for the people of Ireland. We are committed to enabling communities to thrive by continuously upgrading and developing critical infrastructure to support sustainable growth and development, providing safe drinking water, and enhancing the environment.
