The tragic death of technology entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah in the sinking of the Bayesian super yacht off the coast of Italy, has shocked and saddened the people of his mother's hometown of Carrick-on-Suir.

Mr Lynch's mother Dolores O’Neill was from a well-known Treacy Park family in Carrick-on-Suir. She passed away in London in 2020.

Mike visited his mother’s family in Carrick-on-Suir for holidays in his youth and still has many relatives living in the town.

Former Mayor of Carrick-on-Suir and former town councillor Richie O’Neill is a first cousin and his late uncle John (Boney) O’Neill, who died in January, played hurling for Tipperary Minor and Under 21 teams in the 1960s and was a noted Carrick Davins GAA Club player and former chairman of the club.

Due to the O’Neill family’s strong connection to the Davins GAA Club, Mike Lynch made a generous donation a number of years ago that paid for the Club’s hurling wall.

Davins GAA Club Secretary Niall Ryan said all in the club were very saddened to hear of the death of Mike Lynch and his daughter Hannah in such tragic circumstances and extended condolences to all his relatives in Carrick-on-Suir.

“We always remember him when we look at our hurling wall,” he said.
