Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District’s councillors have thrown their support behind the campaign to upgrade Waterford Regional Airport in a letter they have sent to the Department of Transport.
The letter was sent following the unanimous passing of a motion at the monthly meeting of Carrick MD calling for councillors to show support for the airport’s proposed redevelopment.
Its proposer Cllr Kieran Bourke said the South East is the only region that doesn’t have an airport that can cater for 737 aircraft and complained the development of Waterford Airport has remained static for a long number of years.
“It mightn’t have the traffic volumes at the moment but we need to develop it to be ready for the future. They said Knock Airport would be a white elephant but now it’s one of the most successful airports,” he pointed out.
