Such extreme snowfall has not been seen in Tipperary since February 2018

A status orange warning for snow this weekend has seen chaos unravel as Tipperary was blanketed overnight.

Many schools, business and services around the county were closed today due to heavy snowfall and low temperatures causing dangerous travel conditions as well as electricity and water outages around the county.

Reports of vehicles being left abandoned last night were made and subsequently gardaí made an urgent appeal for motorists to avoid the M8 between the Horse and Jockey Junction 6 and Junction 7 Cashel on the Southbound lane.

Such heavy snowfall has not been seen in Tipperary since the 'Beast from the East' in February of 2018.

Tipperary County Fire Service responded to 24 calls since 9am on Sunday, most of which were weather-related incidents.

People are being asked to only travel if necessary as driving conditions will be hazardous, even where roads are gritted.

Tipperary County Council are asking drivers to slow down, drive with caution, be aware of other road users and allow extra time for your journey if you must travel.

Widespread icy conditions will continue throughout the week in Tipperary so stay vigilant and adhere to current warnings in place.
